Treats for Troops!

Did you know…
• Americans buy over 600 million pounds of Halloween candy?
• A typical child’s Halloween candy bag has about 11,000 calories?
• It takes about 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?

Do we really need all that candy or all that time licking a Tootsie Pop?

The 2nd Graders don’t think so! So let’s donate the extra to our TROOPS!

Our 2nd graders are sponsoring a candy drive for our troops and their families! By donating your excess Halloween candy from Nov. 1 – Nov. 6, you can help our National Guard families AND cut down a bit on those licks AND support the 2nd graders!

Music Volunteers Needed for Veteran’s Day Program

Veteran’s Day will be here soon and the choir is busy preparing for their daytime assembly at school on November 9th honoring our veterans and military.  Mrs. Lavrisha is looking for a volunteer to create a slideshow of our veteran/military family members/friends.  Cottonwood families would send their photos and info about their veteran/military family members/friends to this person, and then he/she would organize it into a slideshow and put it to background music.  If you can help, please contact music volunteer coordinators Susan Mui and Winnie Chang at or ASAP so they can send out an email to Cottonwood families to send in their photos/info.  Thank you!

Cottonwood Spirit Days!

October 31, 2017 –  Storybook Character Day – As part of our drive to maintain, promote and engage student interest in reading and celebrate literacy and literature, our school is having a Storybook Character Day on Tuesday, October 31st. On that day, each student is welcome to come to school dressed up as a character from a favorite book. The character must be from a book they have read recently (not just from a movie or cartoon they have watched), and your child should be prepared to describe both the character and the book. Your student must bring the book on the day of the celebration. While we understand that some characters in books are traditionally seen with certain props, costumes cannot include masks, weapons, or inappropriate language or content. As on any other day at Cottonwood Creek, Storybook Character attire must meet dress code expectations.
The dressing up possibilities are endless: Oliver Twist, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, Goldilocks, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Twits, Cinderella, Elmer the Elephant, Three Little Pigs, Harry Potter etc…

P.I.N. Meeting

Is your adolescent rushing in on you like a high tide? Come learn how you can be the safe harbor, a lighthouse, a beacon, the safety of home and shore. Is your teenager driving you crazy? Don’t take it personally. Discover the signs of trouble and understand when they might need help! There is hope for frazzled families! Join Lisa Lane Filholm, a high school teacher (and parent) who has seen it all, at the next PIN presentation for some some frank, funny, practical advice for staying vigilant during these topsy-turvy years. Lisa will share how the role of parenting must change from “mama bear,” when our kids are cubs, to a peregrine falcon (to watch them), a ninja (to disarm them), a personal trainer (to work them), and a mentor (to guide them) as they become teenagers. Parents who know, protect and honor their teenagers can find balance for the whole family.  Please see the attached flyer for more details!

Box Top Contest!!

Cottonwood’s first Box Top contest of the year is well underway!  To achieve our goal of $1800 we ask for you to keep up the fantastic work by continuing to choose Box Top participating products, clipping those coupons and sending them into school.  Send them in just as they are – trimming isn’t necessary.  The class that turns in the most Box Tops between now and FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20 will win a themed party, courtesy of the PTO.   Winners of last year’s fall Box Top contest were treated to a chocolate fountain with five different types of goodies and spring’s lucky winners enjoyed a “make your own slime” party!

Box Tops should be sent to school in a Ziploc or similar type baggie with both your child’s name and your teacher’s name. Each class has their own special Box Tops collection envelope.  In order to ensure box tops are included in the correct classroom’s total we ask that you refrain from sending them to the office.

Please visit Box Tops for Education  for a complete list of Box Top products, some really good coupons and information about how to score tons of free Box Tops. Signing up is simple, quick and free. Please contact Annette at with any questions.
